The clarinet is in the woodwind "family", because with this instrument you blow into it, but is not made of brass. The name comes from wood, because most of these trumpets were wood, and wind, because you need to blow, which is wind. There is not just one type or size of the clarinet, there are many, in fact the clarinet is the biggest "family" in the woodwind "family".
